Math: Algebra 1a -
This class will cover the first half of a regular Algebra 1 course. Students will learn about variables, exponents, inequalities, orders of operation, graphing, problem solving and simple statistics. We will also cover the distributive, the associative and the commutative properties. We will work toward making connections between the math we learn and real life uses of math.
Life Science: Zoology, AKA: Albatross to Zalophus...
What is an animal? What do sponges and snakes have in common? This is a survey course in zoology, or the biology of animals, with an emphasis on Marine Biology. Students will learn about, and meet some invertebrates “up close and personal”; animals such as sponges, corals, crabs, and sea stars. The course will also study how scientists classify life. We will compare Fish, Reptiles, Amphibians and Birds to see what they have in common and how they differ. This course will include field trips, projects, dissections, class discussions, lab work and selected videos that illustrate marine ecosystems and animals.
High School Physics -
Physics is the most basis of all sciences. It is about the nature of motion, forces, energy, matter, heat, sound, light, and the composition of atoms. In this course, students will be exploring the various topics of physics through readings, discussions, demonstrations, projects, and labs.
Science & Art Elective: Space Techs
Experience all the fun of doing astronomy labs with none of the homework. Work on designing and perfecting rocket fuel, and then design a rocket to blast off. Stress test materials for life in space. Make a comet in a bowl, a solar system out of toilet paper and sculpt the surface of the moon in Playdough. Depending upon student interest, we may also do some creative writing involving aliens.
Adventure Friday: - Sailing Away!
Description: Experience sailing a boat on the ocean. Learn to harness the wind, handle sails, sail from point A to point B, and tie basic knots. Students will learn the vocabulary necessary to sail and communicate with their crew, what different points of sail are and how to right a capsized dinghy. This course has an instructor and equipment fee of $120.
